Big problems do not solve themselves. Meaningful change needs dedication and belief that things can be done better. These are the stories of some of our partners’ commitment to change.
In 2020, this New York-based global media organization was churning their way through hundreds and thousands of single-use cups per month in their staff pantries. With 26,000 employees spread across multiple locations around the world, this daily reliance on single-use flew in the face of a corporate desire to operate the world’s most-sustainable offices.
After several months of research, including a comprehensive round of stakeholder engagement, in late-2021 their EMEA head office introduced a staff reuse program using a fully customized Ecoffee Cup Nova™ created from sustainable, low-CO2 materials – which further boosted the program’s ESG credentials.

In 2022, the program was trialed in their US head office, pushing deep into the heartland of single-use culture and yielding some challenges, not the least of which was the residue created by New York’s hard water supply. Rather than remove single-use, management believed in promoting the benefits of the scheme and letting team members make the choice of Cup at point of vend. Drop bins were provided for both pantry and workspace areas.

The EMEA scheme continues into its fifth year, becoming the “new normal” for current team members – and reducing single-use by over 70% since the program’s inception.

From modest beginnings in 1978 at the Covent Garden cafe that still bears its name, London’s eponymous Monmouth Coffee Company has remained at the forefront of the city’s vibrant cafe culture.
But by 2019, with 80% of their 600,000 annual coffees sold in single-use cups, it had become apparent that Monmouth had to take the lead and innovate.
In 2022, we helped Monmouth deliver arguably the least-complicated, most successful deposit-based reuse program in the UK. Their high-footfall location in London’s iconic Borough Market has proven the perfect location for making a real impact – removing well over a million single-use cups since the program began. Not bad for a 45-year-old.
Monmouth’s move to rid its business of single-use cups has seen a wave of cafes follow suit. Find out more about how we helped Monmouth lead by example.

“We wanted to do something about single-use for a long time, but it was really only during the pandemic when we weren’t selling any cups of coffee that it gave us this space to think, We took a long time to think about the design and how it would work, but because we were starting from zero reopening after the pandemic, it meant we could press restart, effectively”.

Anyone who has ever flown couldn’t help but notice the amount of single-use waste created on even the shortest of flights.
In an industry-first, easyJet’s entire in-flight workforce switched to Ecoffee Cup to-go cups and reusable cutlery sets – preventing the use of millions of single-use cups. In total, the program is estimated to remove more than 70 tonnes of waste each year – equating to more than 20m single-use items since late 2023.
We created bespoke Aero reusable cup and cutlery sets especially for the needs of the flight deck and cabin crew; Airbus A320 flightdeck approved!
Fourteen thousand staff received their personal kits for use onboard, with a further 2,000 new crew receiving the same each year.
Find out more about how easyJet got their reuse scheme off the ground.

“We had an excellent collaboration with Ecoffee Cup who were great at listening to our needs and working alongside us to design and deliver reusable products especially for our Airbus aircraft. The products are robust and able to pass all security checks and have effectively replaced our crew’s reliance on single-use items while on board. The crew has received the reusable cups and cutlery with great positivity”.

No trip to central Dublin would be complete without sampling some of the finest sourdough this side of New York. And just like their baked goods, award-winning bakery Bread 41 takes great pride in helping minimize their environmental impact.
As part of their B-Corporation journey, in late 2021 they began to explore what life without single-use cups could look like – and in early 2023 we helped Bread 41 break-free and replace their single-use with our locally-made Ecoffee Cup Nova on a deposit-return system.

Net result? Not only have they saved thousands of euros in single-use inventory costs, they’ve prevented more than 80,000 single-use cups from landfill. Customer feedback has been hugely positive, with to-go coffee sales increasing since the program’s introduction.

Since the beginning of the program, Bread 41 has opened two new bakeries in and around Dublin and is planning up to five more in the coming years – all with reusable cups a part of their brand DNA.

“The Ecoffee Cup held well and drank well, which is really important for the full coffee experience. But on top of the pleasant drinking experience from the Cup, it was the simple, pragmatic way the scheme was being implemented and positive reaction from customers that really piqued my interest in Nova. Also the fact that it was made in Bray, just up the road from where I live, that really clinched it.”

TextIn 2018 Sam Roberts put his money where his mouth was, and in a world first, Boston Tea Party cafes banned 100% single-use across their entire 23-cafe estate. The world’s media paid attention.
Almost eight years later and with well over a million cups saved from waste streams, reuse has become the BTP norm. It has proven to be popular with loyal customers and has become a benchmark for the industry.

“Change is never easy, especially when you’re doing it by yourself, but eight years later it seems crazy that single-use still remains a thing, considering that we have receipts to prove that a commercially successful 100% reusable cup program is more than possible.”

“It was a massive risk. We really had no idea what the reaction was going to be. We were walking this road alone with absolutely no historical data to model our assumptions. We really had to hope for the best but prepare for the worst. But for me it was our only way forward. Once we made the decision to get rid of single-use cups, there was no going back, no matter what the consequences. It was that simple”.
